I am an artist living in Central New York. I specialize in watercolors, using color and abstraction to symbolize the natural world.
My fascination with art began as a child, staring daily at Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” in our Child Craft encyclopedias. His vibrant colors, the swirling strokes of intense energy, provided a different way of interpreting nature and my connection to it.
There were mentors throughout my life that encouraged and supported my deep desire to visually and emotionally express myself through painting, especially my High School Art teacher Gordon Muck. With his guidance, I was able to transcend what I learned and make it my own. After High School I continued my Art education through college courses and life experiences.
Winter is so long here in CNY. Painting helps me express my deep yearning for warmth, color and beauty on the coldest and darkest days. Although I started painting primarily with acrylics, the past 10 years I have been using watercolors almost exclusively. Their viscosity and subtle mixing abilities work well with my artist ideas. I have also enjoyed creating box-like pieces of art, that blend recycled art and mixed media with fun ideas.
I think the artist Agnes Martin says it best. “Devotion to life is a feeling. Art work is made with this feeling, and response to art work is exactly this same feeling. This feeling of devotion literally carries us through life, past all distractions and pitfalls to a perfect awareness of life, to measureless happiness and perfection.”
